About The Role

Kellett School is seeking to appoint a highly motivated, experienced and well qualified Computer Science Teacher for our Senior School.

Computer Science at Kellett School is a progressive, well-resourced and innovative department that encourages both curiosity and technical excellence. We offer Oxford AQA 9210 at GCSE and Oxford AQA 9645 at A Level. All students study Computer Science in Year 7 and may choose an elective Coding course in Years 8 and 9.

The Coding curriculum is entirely programming-based, focusing on the most complex and rewarding aspects of the subject. Students learn through practical, creative modules such as robotics, drone control, website design, game development, and Python and P5.js for interactive digital artwork. Teachers are encouraged to adapt the programme to reflect their own strengths and interests, as enthusiasm and expertise are central to good learning.

In Year 7 we have recently introduced a module on Artificial Intelligence that examines the technology behind diffusion and large language models. Students also consider the ethical, legal, moral and environmental implications of AI training and inference. The course aims to give them a balanced and informed understanding of how AI shapes the world they are growing up in.

The department attracts a small but committed group of students at GCSE and A Level, and results are consistently excellent. In 2024, 79% of students achieved grade 9, 93% grades 8–9, and 50% A* at A Level. We are proud of our involvement in CodeHers, an initiative that has encouraged more girls to take up programming and Computer Science across the school.

Facilities include a dedicated Computer Science lab with 24 PCs, 24 MacBooks, Raspberry Pi 400s, Arduinos, VEX kits, BBC micro:bits, 12 DJI Robomasters and Tello drones, as well as access to 3D printers and VR headsets. These provide students with a rich environment for experimentation and problem-solving.

At A Level, the department has recently adopted Oxford AQA 9645, replacing the externally moderated NEA (AQA 7517). This change reflects our focus on fairness and authenticity in assessment, particularly in the age of AI. Traditional NEAs have become increasingly difficult to manage due to external assistance and automated code generation. By choosing a more exam-based route, we can maintain academic integrity while continuing to support extended programming projects that simulate real-world development work in a flexible and meaningful way.

This position would suit a teacher with strong programming knowledge and a genuine passion for Computer Science. You would join a department that values initiative, collaboration and subject expertise, working closely with an experienced and supportive Head of Department who is keen to develop the subject further.
