The primary role of the Additional Support Teaching Assistant (1:1) is to follow learning targets and/or an Individual Education Plan set by Teachers and the Additional Support Coordinator.
This role commonly involves supporting a student one-to-one in the main classroom as well as supporting classwork in the learning support room. The aim is enabling access to the curriculum and to nurture their learning potential at Kellett School. The aim is always to work towards a situation where the student no longer requires your support and can access the curriculum and navigate day-to-day life independently.
The structure of the day will solely depend on the needs of the child. The hours of work will be based upon the Individual Education Plan of the child you are employed to support.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Personalised Learning Support
- Provide individualised assistance to the student based on recommendations from their Kellett IEP.
- Work 1:1 and in-class with the student to reinforce learning, clarify instructions, and promote engagement in lessons.
- Adapt teaching approaches to suit the student’s learning needs, using visual aids, concrete materials, and multisensory techniques to enhance understanding and retention, where possible.
- Prepare and deliver 1:1 sessions by developing or selecting appropriate resources, ensuring they align with the student’s subject-based learning objectives and needs.
2. Curriculum Adaptation & Differentiation
- Collaborate with ASN staff and subject teachers to develop differentiated learning objectives and modify tasks to suit the student’s abilities.
- Support the student in accessing mainstream lessons by simplifying language, breaking down tasks, and providing scaffolding as needed.
3. In-Class Support & Flexibility
- Provide increased support in lessons when required (e.g., scribing, prompting, or behaviour management) while encouraging independence when opportunities arise.
- Be flexible in responding to the student’s changing needs by adjusting support strategies as directed by the teacher or as appropriate to the learning task.
4. Progress Monitoring & Collaboration
- Track the student’s progress, noting achievements and areas for development, and share feedback with the ASN teachers.
- Work as part of a team, liaising regularly with subject teachers, ASN team, and external professionals to ensure a consistent approach.
